To check distance vision we use images of animals, objects or capital letters. Each eye is checked separately. We will also check if your child's eyes are working together properly. If necessary stereoscopic vision can be tested using special glasses making pictures appear in 3D.
It is sometimes difficult for children to say accurately what they see so we always perform an objective test. This involves the Optometrist shining a light into each eye separately using an instrument called an Retinoscope while holding lenses in front of the eye in order to see how the light is reflected back from the retina. The use of an Ophthalmoscope reveals the health of the eye and shows the internal structure of the eye including the retina crossed by blood vessels and the optic nerve.
Sometimes drops will be used to stop your child focusing for a little while to allow the optometrist to establish with greater accuracy how long or short sighted your child is.
